Two New Additions to AMEN’s Family

We welcome Andrea Cook and Jessica Jakary, two new additions to AMEN’s family. Andrea Cook, a native of Budapest, Hungary comes on board as our new Administrative Assistant. Andrea’s adventurous spirit has taken her to many places around the world, but she still likes to call Florida home. She is an avid photographer who also loves to cook. Currently Andrea is enrolled in an Esthetician Training Course. Andrea will be handling all new memberships, maintaining our data base, coordinating functions, and will be fulfilling the clerical needs of AMEN. If you have any questions regarding membership or functions AMEN may be sponsoring you may email Andrea at gemhome@bellsouth.net or call her at (954) 463-5594.

Jessica Jakary comes to us as an assistant writer and editor of our monthly newsletter. Jessica is a student at Cal State University Long Beach where she is pursuing her degree in journalism, print, and public relations. An experienced writer, Jessica has already logged a number of hours in the journalism field as a contributing writer for two college newspapers. She is also the recipient of three prestigious awards for her editorials and articles. Not content with an already demanding curriculum, she has elected to add another area of focus to her schedule and pursue her personal interests in Religious Studies. If you have any papers or articles for our newsletter that you would like to share you may email Jessie at j_jakary@yahoo.com.

AMEN President Awarded Businesswoman of the Year in Florida

Sasha Parker, our President, was awarded the 2004 Business Woman of the Year for Florida and appointed to the Business Advisory Counsel. She flew to Washington D.C on March 15, 2005 to receive her award in a special ceremony and was honored along with other winners from around the country at a dinner attended by special guest President George W. Bush. Sasha is a true pioneer and has paved the way for many professionals with her incredible training workshops in medical esthetics.

Medical Esthetics National Certification Program

The completion of the certification program is still underway, and has taken us longer than we expected. As our enthusiasm grew we explored and researched other certifications criteria and realized in order to do it right would take us more time and work than we anticipated. We welcome any suggestions or thoughts on criteria to sit for the exam as well as any other input you feel would be pertinent. You may direct any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or help to our president, Sasha Parker at: sashas@bellsouth.net. Our goal to complete the exam and related study material by this fall.

AMEN First Annual Meeting Synopsis

With great success, A.M.E.N. held its first annual kick-off meeting with all five regions being represented by Regional Directors and several local state chairmen. The Board of Directors was introduced and new state chairmen were announced. There was so much camaraderie and enthusiasm in the room. We had as a special guest Dr. Bruce Woodling, MD of AAAM, who during networking shared his vision and optimism for AMEN. There were many highlights of the day but world renowned Dr. James Fulton, MD, PhD who lectured on acne and anti-aging and demonstrated a Monheit Peel worked a special place into the hearts of all attendees. The focus of our first meeting reported findings for insurance malpractice, we were updated on current esthetic nursing practice, certification opportunities, the legislative process, and anti-aging modalities to incorporate into your practice, and of course great networking opportunities. We are currently interviewing 2 attorneys with a specialty in Board issues to assist our legislative journey.

We are planning a West Coast (California) meeting in the first quarter of 2005. Come and make new friends, learn wonderful news and valuable updates in medical esthetics and be a part of history in this continual launching of A.M.E.N. Please check website for date and location.

Remember, there is power in numbers so tell your friends about this exciting opportunity to be a part of a scientific and leading edge program in medical esthetics. We look forward to seeing you there.

Victory In Arizona!

Just to show you how being united works. I had just left Arizona after a week of classes and being on my soapbox of our responsibility to ourselves as nursing professionals, and the importance of being involved in the legislative decisions that affect our careers. I was home about 2 weeks when I got the call from one of my Arizona nurses that the Board was meeting to hear and make decisions regarding esthetic procedures done by nurses in Arizona. What were they to do????? My office gave them the names of Arizona nurses we had trained and thanks to Joan Olcott and Leigh Giordano approximately 15 nurses showed up.Now that ’s United!! Below is a synopsis from the Novelino Newsletter of the Arizona Board meeting. Arizona Board of Nursing Supports Medical Esthetics On June 8, 2004, the Arizona Board of Nursing Scope of Practice Committee met to discuss and review dermatological procedures performed by nurses. As a result of the meeting and with input from some of us practicing in medical esthetics, a draft was developed to present to the Board for a ruling. The draft established educational requirements and practice parameters for nurses to perform sclerotherapy, laser therapy, Botox, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, dermal fillers and mesotherapy. Natasha Troehler RN, BSN, CLNC, serves on this committee and recently audited the Esthetic Skin Institute’s training courses for nurses as part of her research for the meeting. Natasha found the courses to be excellent, thorough and of sound educational value for nurses and physicians wanting to get into medical esthetics. The objectives of the Esthetic Skin Institute’s training are within the required parameters of educational qualifications determined by the committee. The general consensus of the meeting was supportive of nurses to practice medical esthetics under “direct or indirect” oversight from a qualified provider who has expertise in the procedures. This was considered a great victory for nurses who perform these procedures in Arizona. Thank you Natasha for your hard work, diligence and support!
